Jas Jones: Typographic Stereotypes

Typographic Stereotypes is a project highlighting gender ideologies that are deep rooted in society and reinforced through typefaces. Typically, ‘feminine’ fonts are seen as delicate and cursive, and ‘masculine’ ones as bold and geometric. These outdated stereotypes limit creative freedom. Through a type specimen book analysing fonts from the past 120 years, the project examines type features, usage, and history to promote gender-neutral design. A companion website allows users to interactively test type variables, reinforcing the idea that type should be chosen for function and aesthetics—not gender.
